Family Recreation Area at Lee District Park
Plans are underway for a family activity complex unlike anything else in Fairfax County or the metropolitan area – a dedicated outdoor recreation area that will engage children in physical activity and spark their imaginations with creative play. This magical place will bring families together with old-fashioned and thoroughly modern play elements that are accessible to everyone, including people with disabilities.
The Family Recreation Area will be located within the 138-acre Lee District Park, just three miles from the Beltway.
The Family Recreation Area will includes:
- A Treehouse overlooking a forest and stream valley. The Treehouse will be entered from gently-sloping ramps accessible to children and adults in wheelchairs or with limited mobility.
- A Spray Park where water showers from fanciful structures, providing a safe and fun activity on hot summer days.
- A Playground with slides, swings and other equipment specially designed for use by all children, including those with disabilities.
- An old-fashioned, fully accessible Carousel.
- A Family Picnic Area with covered shelters.
- Restrooms, changing rooms and other support facilities for a day of family fun.
-
Funding for the Treehouse, restrooms, parking and related infrastructure is complete. The Tree House is currently under construction and is planned to open by Fall 2010.
-
The Joey Pizzano Memorial Fund, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of children with special needs, is donating the construction of the Spray Park. It is planned to open on Memorial Day 2011.
To complete this unique recreational complex, we need help from the entire community to fund the construction of the Playground and Carousel. Opportunities exist for major donors to sponsor and name elements of the facility which will be enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of children and family members each year.
